History of Sri Lanka

The written history of Sri Lanka spans over 2500 years. The written history starts with when King Vijaya came to Sri Lanka from India in the 6th century BC. Later, King Pandukabaya established the Anuradhapura Kingdom. He made the tank of ‘Abaya Wewa’. The Buddhist civilization started in the Anuradhapura Kingdom after the Mihindu Thero came from India. That incident happened in the King Devanampiyathissa era of the 3rd century BC. King Dutugemunu and King Walagamba were the greatest kings of the Anuradhapura Kingdom. At that time, the Anuradhapura Kingdom became very developed. The ancient ruins of Anuradhapura certainly demonstrate this today.

In the sixth century A.D., King Kashyapa established his kingdom on Sigiriya Rock. The main reason for that was the foreign attacks on the Anuradhapura Kingdom. The Sigiriya Rock Fortress is a great example of the art, architecture, and technology of the ancient Sri Lankan people.

After heavy foreign attacks on the Anuradhapura Kingdom, the capital was shifted to Polonnaruwa. King Vijayabahu and King Parakramabahu were the two greatest kings of the Polonnaruwa Kingdom. Another heavy attack from south India ended the Polonnaruwa Kingdom in south-west Sri Lanka in the 13th century.

The kingdoms were shifted to Dambadeniya, Yapahuwa, Kurunegala, Gampola, and Kotte within 300 years. The Portuguese came to Sri Lanka in the 16th century. The last Sri Lankan Kingdom of Kandy also started in the 16th century. The Portuguese controlled all the coastal areas of the island until the Dutch captured it in the 17th century. Later, the British captured Sri Lanka in 1796. After that, they also captured the last Sinhalese kingdom of Kandy in 1815. They ruled the whole of Sri Lanka until the country received independence in 1948.

Cutural Triangle of Sri Lanka

The Sri Lanka Cultural Triangle connects the three main ancient cities of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, and Kandy. Dambulla, Sigiriya, Mihintale, and Ritigala are the other main cities near the cultural triangle. There are many ancient ruins, sculptures, stupas, old temples, monasteries, relics, and tanks that can be found here. Anuradhapura ancient city, Polonnaruwa ancient city, Sigiriya Rock Fortress, Dambulla Cave Temple, Temple of the Tooth Relic, and Nalanda Gedige are some of the most visited cultural sites in Sri Lanka.

Apart from the cultural triangle, the ancient ruins can be found in Galle, Jaffna, Medirigiriya, and Yapahuwa. There are six major UNESCO cultural sites in Sri Lanka.
